Crop Mob: Volunteers Help Young Farmers Build Sustainable Small Farms in North Carolina
This is truly an inspirational story! A small group of volunteers in North Carolina are joining together to help young farmers build sustainable small farms. The volunteers come from all walks of life, from backyard gardeners to office workers. Many don't have their own land to work and enjoy getting their hands dirty. Working together on what has been dubbed the modern equivalent to barn-raising by the Los Angeles Times, this volunteer group is brought together by social networking sites like Facebook and Google. The work they do benefits local communities by encouraging small farmers and locally grown food, and it benefits the volunteers, too, helping many to learn new farming techniques.
"Crop Mob is not a charity," said [Crop Mob founder Rob] Jones, who has a master's in environmental education and now has a fellowship with a community development nonprofit group. "At its core, it's about community -- farmers helping farmers. And when the 'agricurious' come out to help them and learn, well, that's just icing on the top." (LA Times)
